A genuine hand knotted Oriental rug will last a very long time if properly cared for. Take precautions to prolong the life of your rug by protecting it from premature wear and the most common types of damage.
- Liquid damage-most commonly from potted plants that are over watered, pet stains, as well as drink spills that aren’t immediately cleaned up and dried properly.
- Pet damage-chewing or scratching at the rug.
- Vacuum cleaner damage-improper use of a vacuum cleaner or use of an incorrect vacuum cleaner.
- Chemical damage-mainly due to improper cleaning practices.
- Uneven wear-failure to rotate the rug.
- Sun damage-due to direct sunlight over an extended period of time.
Food spills and pet urine
Pet urine presents the most serious problems. It can cause color run in the rug and it can be difficult to remove or disguise the odor. It can also damage the rug chemically by making the foundation hard and less flexible. If the urine is a repeat offense, this can cause the foundation of the rug to loose enough strength that it may crack when rolled or folded.
As with most stains, urine is handled the easiest when the spot is treated quickly before it has the chance to dry. Use a paper towel or clean white cloth to blot up as much of the liquid as you can. Try to rinse and blot out as much of the spill as possible. A large stain may need to have more water used to rinse the spill. Place a large dishpan under the carpet to catch the water that will come through the backing of the rug. You can also place the rug over a bucket or trash can. Make sure the stain is directly over the container and that it is the low point of the rug so that the water runs through and flushes out the contaminants and doesn’t spread it to other parts of the rug. Add about 1 cup of white vinegar per gallon to the rinse water. Vinegar helps prevent the colors in your rug from bleeding and will help neutralize urine odor.
After you are done rinsing, blot the stain dry and clean with rug shampoo. Be careful not to scrub too hard. Use a white rag or a sponge. Dry the rug thoroughly. Keep the wet part of your rug off of the floor. It is ideal to have air circulation both above and below the carpet to dry it from both sides.
When trying to clean up a spill, work to avoid increasing the surface area of the spill.
You can also try this spot cleaning solution.
-1/4 cup white vinegar*
-1/2 tsp liquid dishwashing detergent
-2 cups water (room temp)
*Most Oriental rug dyes are acid-fast. The white vinegar makes the wash water more acidic and reinforces the bond between the dye and the wool. This helps to prevent color from bleeding.
As your final step, use cool fresh water to blot out the solution. Use absorbing towels or a firm sponge. When the nap feels dry, check the back of the rug to make sure it is completely dry as well.
